EKOSETTI
a guidebook to sustainable production in Finland
“Ekosetti” is a guidebook to environmentally sustainable operations, written for the Finnish audiovisual industry. It contains practical points on how to make domestic productions more environmentally friendly, and its goal is to inspire the industry to adopt a greener production culture. Ekosetti was published in 2019 in Finnish and in English, and in early 2025 it has been downloaded more than 13,500 times in total.
FUNDING
Ekosetti was developed with the support and funding of the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture AVEK/Vieteri Grant, Audiovisual Producers Finland – APFI, and Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture/Department of Film, Television and Scenography, as well as the School of Engineering/Department of Built Environment. The guide was created as part of Aalto University’s interdisciplinary seed funding project, “Sustainability in Filmmaking (SUFI).”
EKOSETTI IN EUROS
A Peek into the Economics of Production Sustainability
“Ekosetti in Euros” is an independent follow-up to the Ekosetti sustainability guide. The publication explores the relationship between the economy and sustainability in audiovisual productions. It includes a selection of concrete examples that illustrate the ecological and financial impacts of everyday choices made in productions. The aim of the publication is to challenge and inspire readers to reconsider the myth of a higher price tag for sustainable practices—and to demonstrate that more responsible solutions can also save money.

AUTHORS
Anne Puolanne
Anne Puolanne works as a Sustainability Manager at the Audiovisual Producers Finland APFI, where she promotes sustainability within Finland’s film and TV industry from practice to policies. Since the early 2010s, Puolanne has worked as a TV freelancer in roles such as writer and journalist, and she has been one of the pioneers of creating a more environmentally friendly audiovisual industry in Finland. She holds a BA in Media & Arts (2012) and BSc in Natural Resources (2020), with both theses focusing on the ecological aspects of the film and TV industry.
In her role at APFI, Puolanne has trained hundreds of industry professionals and produced multiple reports, including compiling Finland’s first historical overview of the topic. In 2025, Puolanne was appointed as an EU Climate Ambassador.
Kaisa “Kaika” Astikainen
Kaisa “Kaika” Astikainen is a producer, filmmaker, and sustainable filmmaking specialist active in the Finnish industry since 2006. She earned her Master of Arts from Aalto University’s ELO Film School in 2016. Her award-winning documentary Heart of the Land (2016) toured international festivals, while Snowball Effect (2023), co-produced with director Pauliina Punkki, received a Jussi Award nomination for Best Documentary.
Since 2018, Astikainen has worked as an eco-coordinator and consultant in Finnish productions. She authored Ekosetti and Ekosetti in Euros, and has lectured extensively on sustainability. In 2023, she implemented the Eco-Coordinating Pilot Program for audiovisual professionals at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences as part of the EU-funded Digital Creative Industries and Beyond (DCIB) project. Currently, she is pursuing a Ph.D. at Aalto University, focusing on sustainable film production.
